The number of trees an acre of land can support averages about 200-400 trees. The actual number of trees today in an acre of land is closer to 1500-2500. This number of trees in todays forest is a direct result of total fire supression. For years the Federal Government implemented a practice of fire prevention for fear that fires would destroy our forests.
The result is an increase in the number of trees per acre, reduced tree size and stand densities that support fires instead of reducing them. Trees are prone to stress, increased risk of disease and a reduction in growth rate. This poses a great risk to all of us who live in the urban/wildland interface. Since we own a piece of the forest as property owners, we need to take responsibility for the care of our forest.
As a land owner, you can make a difference. Take the time to cut some trees and reduce the density of your forest. The forest will be healthier, less prone to stress, grow faster, put more water into the ground, resist fires by increasing the distance between trees, provide better habitat for wildlife and reduce the risk of fire to your home.
It really works!!
